New Books in Ukrainian Studies - Women of Ukraine: Reportages from the War and Beyond

Russian war showed that there is no limit to violence when it comes to genocidal conquest. It also showed the Ukrainian resilience and the power of ordinary citizens in resisting the invaders. In her first book, Anna Romandash collected testimonies of this resilience from different parts of Ukraine. Her work is a set of 33 reportages of extraordinary women who had to face the war, deal with loss of loved ones, and showed courage before the toughest circumstances. The heroines are soldiers, volunteers, psychologists, educators, and many others - who had to experience the double burden of the war as Ukrainians and women.

This talk is about what it was like collecting these testimonies, and how women managed to share their stories despite having to relive traumas of the recent past. Romandash will talk about her work as a journalist in many dangerous areas across Ukraine, the specifics of working with vulnerable communities, and the need to give more space to the experiences of women whose individual struggles often go unnoticed amid the national tragedy.

Anna Romandash is an award-winning journalist from Ukraine and an author of "Women of Ukraine: Reportages from the War and Beyond". She has extensive experience working across Eastern Europe and Central Asia where she researched democratization processes, freedom movements, and human rights violations. Her areas of interest include international security, Eastern Europe, sanctions, and energy transition. Romandash is the Fourth Freedom Forum’s first Howard S. Brembeck Fellow, a Research Affiliate at the Mgrublian Center for Human Rights at Claremont McKenna College, and a digital scholar at Vassar College. She holds an MGA degree from the Keough School of Global Affairs at the University of Notre Dame. She is a 2023-2024 Petro Jacyk Non-Residential Scholar.

Discover the Art of Varenyky with Olia Hercules

Presented by: St. Volodymyr Institute and Ukrainian Museum of Canada, Ontario Branch

Discover the Art of Varenyky with Olia Hercules

Join Olia for a live, interactive online workshop where we will explore the world of Varenyky, Olia’s ultimate source of comfort food.  Under Olia’s expert tuition, we will make everything together from scratch during the class.  We will learn about whether the perfect Varenyk exists, and why Olia would always choose Varenyky as her last supper.  We will also ask whether there is an ultimate number of Varenyky to be eaten in one sitting!

The class will start with an introduction, then we will make the dough.  We will look at fillings, exploring traditional fillings and perhaps the not-so traditional fillings.  We will learn Olia’s special techniques to elevate pinching so that our Varenyky are served in all their glory.

Olia will talk us through various accompaniments which can be served with Varenyky, and we will make Pelyustka, cabbage pickled with beetroot to look like rose petals. Olia will show us how to serve this versatile pickle alongside the Varenyky to create a beautiful plate of food.

Recipes will be provided to registrants one week prior to workshop!

🇺🇦While participation is free, Olia is fundraising for Ukraine through the Legacy of War Foundation, an international charity providing support to civilians affected by conflict.

We are sharing with you the traditions and atmosphere that you would experience at your Baba’s (grandmother’s) home — from a full-to-bursting Easter basket ready for blessing at church, to a corner where someone just blew out the candle and put down their kistka while making a pysanka.

And like every trip to Baba’s house, you can take home a reminder of your visit. We have many pieces of Ukrainian-themed china and embroidery for sale within the exhibition that you will be able to purchase and take home once our exhibition closes on March 24th.

Book Launch: The Red Harvest by Michael Cherkas

Book Launch: The Red Harvest by Michael Cherkas

Join us on Thursday, November 30, 2023, at SVI for a captivating discussion with graphic novelist Michael Cherkas, who will take us through his latest work, "Red Harvest."

Delve into the historical-fiction masterpiece that sheds light on the Holodomor, a tragic chapter in Ukrainian history, during which at least 4 million Ukrainians lost their lives in the early '30s under Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin's regime. Cherkas, a Ukrainian-Canadian author renowned for "The Silent Invasion," masterfully weaves together true stories and historical accounts to illustrate this dark period. The terror-famine was the result of the Soviet Communist Party's forced collectivization, which targeted Ukrainian peasants, leading to the confiscation of their property, livestock, and crops. As we witness the unfolding horrors in the current Ukrainian war, it's essential to remember this prior Russian aggression.

Cherkas's journey to create this graphic novel began in 2008 when a colleague with Ukrainian roots approached him about doing a graphic novel about the Holodomor. The project gained momentum during the 2020 pandemic, leading to its completion just before Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Through the lens of protagonist Mykola Kovalenko, a Ukrainian immigrant to Canada and famine survivor, Cherkas vividly illustrates the cost of resisting Stalin and the ruling Communist Party. Kovalenko's memories transport us to a time when Ukrainian families and villagers struggled not only to comprehend the war waged against them but also to survive.

Don't miss this eye-opening event featuring "Red Harvest," hailed by Publishers Weekly as a Top 10 Fall Adult Comics & Graphic Novels pick.

A Q&A session will follow the discussion.

Moderated by Sophia Isajiw

You can purchase The Red Harvest by Michael Cherkas at the book launch.
All proceeds from sales will go to the Canada Ukraine Foundation’s Ukrainian Humanitarian Appeal.

Our Mission: Amplifying Ukrainian Heritage

At SVI, we take immense pride in spotlighting the vibrant tapestry of Ukrainian heritage and culture. Since the onset of the full-scale war in Ukraine, our mission has been to amplify the voices of Ukrainian artists, academics, and institutions—both in Ukraine and among those who reside in Canada. Now, more than ever, it's essential to celebrate and share our rich history.

In October 2022, Maksym Davydenko, co-founder of the Cultural Heritage Fund of Ukraine, with Olha Honchar, director of the Territory of Terror Museum in Lviv, Ukraine, spear-headed the Wounded Culture project. This initiative is an act of non-violent cultural resistance to the colonial practice of destroying public memory. Focused on the recording of cultural crimes and professional, scientific documentation of oral testimonies, the Wounded Culture team strives, not only to draw the attention of the international community to cultural losses in Ukraine but also to reduce these losses by utilizing VR technologies that enable the preservation of the images of museums located in endangered borderline areas.

Mr. Davydenko and Ms. Honchar have been touring North America, meeting with museum professionals, academics, cultural heritage advocates, and Ukrainian communities in New York City, New Jersey, Detroit, Chicago and here, in Toronto, to spotlight the diligent work of the museum professionals in Ukraine and the Museum Crisis Centre.  The Museum Crisis Centre, a grass-roots initiative, is a network of over 150 museums, many of which fall into the top risk group and remain potential targets of seizure by Russia during the on-going war. Since the start of the invasion, they have forged peer-to-peer access to 1,380 museum workers from the most war-torn areas of Ukraine.  MCC members have assisted colleagues in difficult life circumstances and helped them preserve their unique collections.

The CC’s fundraising aims to support museum employees, preserve, and relocate endangered artifacts, and document the war through oral histories and virtual reality (VR)-based projects.

Vendulka, Flight to Freedom: Exhibition and Artist Talk with Ondřej Kundra

So many lives were cut short by the Holocaust, many with no trace to leave behind for future generations to remember. Vendulka tells the story of a single scrap of remembrance—a candid photograph taken in the midst of this unspeakable tragedy—and that artifact’s amazing aftermath.

Famed Czech photographer Jan Lukas snapped an offhand portrait of twelve-year-old Vendulka Vogl in March 1943. A friend of the Vogls, Lukas was saying goodbye to the family, who were soon to leave Prague for a concentration camp. The photograph almost didn’t see the light of day—Lukas knew that if the Nazis found it on him, he could wind up in the camps as well—but the image was eventually developed and came to symbolize the Holocaust and humanize its victims. Seventy years after this famous picture was taken, investigative journalist Ondřej Kundra discovered that, despite all odds, Vendulka Vogl had survived the camps of Terezín, Auschwitz, and Christianstadt, and was in fact still alive and living in the United States. Kundra persuaded her to tell the remarkable story surrounding the photograph: her survival, her later decision to flee the Communist regime for America, and how she later reconnected with Jan Lukas, maintaining a lifelong friendship.

Vogl’s thrillingly moving story, Kundra’s sharp and engaging writing, and Lukas’s striking photography all combine to make Vendulka an inspiring investigation into the horrors of totalitarianism and the redemptive beauty of friendship.

Part of the presentation will be an exhibition, reading from the book and story behind it.

The event is free but registration through Eventbrite required.

Sacred Straw Workshop: Children's Straw Appliqué

Join the Ukrainian Museum of Canada, Ontario Branch for their first auxiliary program for the “Sacred Straw” exhibit.

CHILDREN'S STRAW APPLIQUÉ with Olena Diachenko on Saturday, September 9, 2023 at 2 PM for kids (7 - 10 yrs.) 620 Spadina Avenue.

Straw is an amazing natural material for creativity. Its golden color shows the richness of nature. Craftsmanship of straw products is thousands of years old. Roofs for houses, furniture, dishes were made from it, various interior items were decorated with it. Ukrainian craftsmen knew how to make real works of art from straw. At our master class, we will learn how to work with this unique material. All students will create their compositions - the first works of art from natural straw.

A master class is conducted by Olenka Dyachenko. She was born and lived in Kyiv until 2022. She traveled a lot throughout Ukraine, admiring the folk art of different regions. She sincerely admires works of Ukrainian art and wants to share knowledge about various creative techniques. Since October 2022, she lives in Toronto and conducts art classes for children and adults.

Spots are limited. Please call the museum at 416-923-9861 to register.
