SVI Library Book of the Month: Blood of Others by Rory Finnin

Last week, May 18, was a day of remembrance of the Soviet deportation of the Crimean Tatars in 1944. To mark this tragic event, SVI Library's Book of the Month is "Blood of Others: Stalin's Crimean Atrocity and the Poetics of Solidarity," published in 2022 by Professor Rory Finnin of Cambridge University. This book draws extensively on literature and other sources; it provides an in-depth presentation of the deportation in a broad historical context, from the initial Russian conquest of Crimea to the illegal annexation in 2014. This new book "shows the power of literary texts to forge ties of solidarity with an oppressed people across national, ethnic, and linguistic lines, ties of solidarity that would not exist otherwise. It is a book about a tragedy of the past that inspires optimism about the future. It is an essential read for anyone interested in the literature, history, and politics of the Black Sea region," Serhii Plokhy, thee Mykhailo Hrushevsky professor of Ukrainian history at Harvard University and director of the Harvard Ukrainian Research Institute.
